Ghana News Agency"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Ghana&#039;s preferred news source: Accurate, Credible, Objective, Timely<\/p>\n<p>By Maxwell&nbsp;Awumah, GNA&nbsp;<br \/>Ho, April 27, GNA &#8211; Dr Belete Molla Getahun, Ethiopia\u2019 Minister for Innovation and Technology has said that science,\u00a0technology\u00a0and innovation (STI) should be treated as practical development tools.\u00a0<br \/>As tools for development, they should not be seen as &#8220;an abstract ideal\u201d or a \u201cluxury reserved for developed countries\u201d.&nbsp;<br \/>He was speaking at the Eighth African Science,&nbsp;Technology&nbsp;and Innovation Forum, in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia on Sunday, which brought together ministers, senior policymakers, representatives of the African Union and United Nations system, private sector leaders, academia and civil society and&nbsp;monitored&nbsp;by the Ghana News Agency.&nbsp;<br \/>The forum was&nbsp;convened&nbsp;under the theme: \u201cAchieving Progress Towards the 2030 Agenda and Agenda 2063 Through Transformative and Coordinated Actions in Science, Technology and Digital innovation.\u201d&nbsp;<br \/>Dr Belete linked science,&nbsp;technology&nbsp;and innovation to sustainability, citing Ethiopia\u2019s work on reforestation, electric mobility, artificial intelligence, data&nbsp;infrastructure&nbsp;and emerging technologies, including peaceful applications of nuclear science for development outcomes in energy,&nbsp;agriculture&nbsp;and health.&nbsp;&nbsp;<br \/>The Minister also underscored continental cooperation, arguing that no country can innovate in isolation and called for stronger science diplomacy, harmonized approaches, interoperable&nbsp;systems&nbsp;and deeper collaboration.&nbsp;<br \/>In a remark,&nbsp;Mr&nbsp;Claver&nbsp;Gatete, Executive Secretary of Economic Commission for Africa (ECA) said Africa needs a deliberate policy and investment&nbsp;regimes&nbsp;to catch up with the rest of the world in the digital space.&nbsp;<br \/>He noted that though opportunities expand globally, the reality on the continent&nbsp;remains&nbsp;deeply uneven.&nbsp;<br \/>He said according to ITU, United Nations specialized agency for digital technologies, internet usage in Africa stood at just 36 per cent in 2025, with glaring divides between urban and rural areas, and between men and women.&nbsp;<br \/>Furthermore, the continent\u2019s contribution to global innovation is also limited, accounting for only 0.6 per cent of global patent applications, despite&nbsp;representing&nbsp;nearly one-fifth of the world\u2019s population.&nbsp;<br \/>Mr&nbsp;Gatete said these are signals of untapped potential and called for an urgent closing of the gaps in innovation.&nbsp;<br \/>He said: \u201cFor example, in Kenya, climate-smart agricultural technologies are increasing crop yields by up to 20 per cent, while reducing input costs.&nbsp;<br \/>In Rwanda, drone-based medical delivery systems have reduced wastage by 67 per cent and cut stockout times by 60 per cent transforming health supply chains.\u201d&nbsp;<br \/>He said without coordination, even the most promising innovations will remain isolated from successes, rather than drivers of continental transformation.&nbsp;<br \/>\u201cIt offers Africa a critical opportunity to shape global norms, ensuring that emerging technologies reflect our realities, our priorities and our aspirations,\u201d&nbsp;Mr&nbsp;Gatete added.&nbsp;<br \/>He reassured that the Economic Commission for Africa&nbsp;remains&nbsp;committed \u2013 through its policy research,&nbsp;convening&nbsp;capacity and technical&nbsp;assistance&nbsp;\u2013 to support Member States to turn these priorities into measurable outcomes.&nbsp;<br \/>GNA&nbsp;<br \/>Edited by Benjamin Mensah<br \/><strong>Head Office Location<br \/><\/strong>Opp. Registrar General&#8217;s Department<br \/>Dodoo Lane, Ministries, Accra<br \/>Digital Address: GA\u2013144\u20135449<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/news.google.com\/rss\/articles\/CBMiowFBVV95cUxPWVJQWHI4MHNNV1FFRWt4QVpHM1N1bHN0djhQc2hXUXU0T1VIYWFFVDFfOUdJaEdJSmd1M2JXV2MzTk85UXU0TUlaWWtLNS10WjN5SDM3ZzROM0Itc1ZOSWJtQlNmd2xoanJ0c1dQTTIyZzhxdEp0NWM0T1o0NUVlUkVRbWttQmNNZElZZE5PLWZGV0VHRHRFQmpZMzBnU2FYOXdZ?oc=5\">source<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Ghana&#039;s preferred news source: Accurate, Credible, Objective, Timely By Maxwell&nbsp;Awumah, GNA&nbsp;Ho, April 27, GNA &#8211;
