{"id":12071,"date":"2026-04-26T21:20:57","date_gmt":"2026-04-26T21:20:57","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/globalnewstoday.uk\/index.php\/2026\/04\/26\/symposium-mulls-the-future-of-taiwan-taipei-times\/"},"modified":"2026-04-26T21:20:57","modified_gmt":"2026-04-26T21:20:57","slug":"symposium-mulls-the-future-of-taiwan-taipei-times","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/globalnewstoday.uk\/index.php\/2026\/04\/26\/symposium-mulls-the-future-of-taiwan-taipei-times\/","title":{"rendered":"Symposium mulls the future of Taiwan &#8211; Taipei Times"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>President William Lai (\u8cf4\u6e05\u5fb7) yesterday expressed hope that the 14th Global Taiwan National Affairs Symposium would help buttress a sense of national identity and foster a resilient Taiwan through international cooperation.<br \/>In a congratulatory message read by senior presidential adviser Yao Chia-wen (\u59da\u5609\u6587), Lai said he hoped the event would rally Taiwanese around the nation\u2019s consciousness, defend democratic values and strengthen partnerships with global allies.<br \/>Vice President Hsiao Bi-khim (\u856d\u7f8e\u7434) in a separate message said the platform has helped strengthen solidarity among Taiwanese at home and abroad, amplify Taiwan\u2019s voice in the international community and contribute significantly to resisting authoritarian expansion and consolidating democratic gains.<br \/>Photo: Wang Yi-sung, Taipei Times<br \/>The symposium in Taipei yesterday was co-organized by the World Taiwanese Congress and the Taiwan Nation Alliance in Taipei, with this year\u2019s edition themed \u201cNormalizing the State: New Prospects for Taiwan-Japan-US Relations.\u201d<br \/>Yao said the annual conference serves as an important platform for communication among Taiwanese worldwide.<br \/>While Taiwan faces many challenges and criticism of the government persists, such as assertions that the ruling Democratic Progressive Party has left many problems unsolved despite being in power for years, he said that internal divisions would only weaken the country.<br \/>Taiwan Nation Alliance convener Kuo Chung-kuo (\u90ed\u91cd\u570b) said the ultimate goal is the rectification of Taiwan\u2019s name and drafting a new constitution.<br \/>The conference\u2019s mission is to forge a collective consensus among Taiwanese, he said, adding that only by equipping themselves with knowledge can people effectively counter China\u2019s \u201cunited front\u201d infiltration and cognitive warfare, strengthening internal cohesion and resilience.<br \/>\u201cThere is no issue of unification or reunification between Taiwan and China \u2014 only one of invasion and aggression,\u201d Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs Francois Wu (\u5433\u5fd7\u4e2d) said in his keynote speech.<br \/>If cross-strait affairs are framed as a unification or reunification issue, that is the same as framing Taiwan as a Chinese internal affair, he said.<br \/>Once cross-strait affairs become an invasion issue, there would be a \u201cstatus quo\u201d to safeguard, he said, adding that Taiwan has never been as prosperous as it is today.<br \/>Taiwan is a unique country, sui generis, and possesses the attributes of a sovereign state, performing better economically than 95 percent of countries worldwide, he said.<br \/>The nation has achieved astounding progress in areas such as the economy, politics, freedom, gender equality and international image, he said, adding that the more distance Taiwan keeps from China, the better it becomes.<br \/>Taiwan was internationally seen as a \u201ctrouble maker\u201d 20 years ago, but that label has shifted to China, he said, accusing Beijing of obstructing freedom of navigation and overflight in the Taiwan Strait, blocking Taiwan\u2019s presidential visits abroad and limiting the nation\u2019s international participation.<br \/>Saying the slogan of \u201cnormalizing Taiwan as a state\u201d has been promoted for years, Taiwanese academics at the event yesterday called for a more gradual, pragmatic approach, such as adopting the Gregorian calendar instead of the Republic of China (ROC) calendar.<br \/>Taiwan meets all the criteria of a sovereign state, but the ROC is, in legal terms, a republic that calls itself China, said Lo Cheng-chung (\u7f85\u627f\u5b97), a professor at the National Kaohsiung University of Science and Technology\u2019s Graduate Institute of Science and Technology Law.<br \/>\u201cEven if you put \u2018Taiwan\u2019 in parentheses, it does not resolve the issue. In the Constitution, Taiwan is downgraded to a \u2018region,\u2019 and some people even engage in daily self-denial of its national status,\u201d he said.<br \/>He urged a gradual approach for normalization, saying local governments could rename streets that still carry China-related names.<br \/>Citing polls, Soochow University associate professor Chen Fang-yu (\u9673\u65b9\u9685) said more than 80 percent of Taiwanese believe the ROC and the People\u2019s Republic of China are not subordinate to each other, while about 75 percent agree that \u201cTaiwan is a sovereign independent country called the ROC.\u201d <br \/>While more people are becoming receptive to constitutional reform and name change, political concerns remain, especially over ever-present Chinese threats, he said.<br \/>As for how to normalize the state, he described the ROC as \u201cusing a borrowed shell for a new business.\u201d<br \/>The shell should not be the subject, he said, adding the government should eventually discard the \u201cone China\u201d principle entirely to avoid ambiguity over state sovereignty and encourage the international community to form diplomatic policies that separate Taiwan from China.<br \/>                                         <font class=\"red hidden\"><\/font>                                                                                 Actor Darren Wang (\u738b\u5927\u9678) was sentenced to six months in prison, commutable to a fine, by the New Taipei District Court today for contravening the Personal Data Protection Act (\u500b\u4eba\u8cc7\u6599\u4fdd\u8b77\u6cd5) in a case linked to an alleged draft-dodging scheme.
