Now, lawmakers are planning to run for re-election without touting their ties to Trump, <a onclick=\"_sendArticleBodyInlineLinkClickAnalytics('https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/legal\/government\/republicans-retool-midterm-strategy-trumps-policies-less-trump-2026-04-25\/')\" href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/legal\/government\/republicans-retool-midterm-strategy-trumps-policies-less-trump-2026-04-25\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"\" title=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/legal\/government\/republicans-retool-midterm-strategy-trumps-policies-less-trump-2026-04-25\/\">Reuters<\/a> reports. <br \/>A strategy discussed during a closed-door meeting featuring top conservative officials, including White House Chief of Staff Susie Wiles, pushed lawmakers to speak about Trump\u2019s tax cuts, not their loyalty to Trump or his unpopular war with Iran.<br \/>This, Republicans hope, will allow them to capitalize on Trump\u2019s ability to turn out low-propensity voters while avoiding making the 2026 midterms a referendum on the president, sources told Reuters.<br \/>Strategists reportedly expressed concern that if Trump makes himself the focus of a candidate\u2019s campaign, especially in a competitive race, it could tank that Republican\u2019s chances.<br \/>One Trump adjacent political strategist \u200btold Reuters that Democrats \u201care going to try to nationalize the election and say we\u2019re a rubber stamp for Trump.\u201d <br \/>\u201cWe have to break out of that and show race by race why we\u2019re the better choice,\u201d they said.<br \/>The White House did not immediately respond to the Daily Beast\u2019s request for comment. In a statement to Reuters, White House spokesperson Olivia Wales said Trump was the \u201cunequivocal leader of the Republican party\u201d and was \u201ccommitted to maintaining Republicans\u2019 majority in Congress.\u201d<br \/>Wiles convened top GOP strategists to the Washington Waldorf Astoria\u2014Trump\u2019s one-time hotel in the capital\u2014to discuss their 2026 game plan. <br \/>White House officials reportedly expressed confidence that Virginia\u2019s Demcratic-led redistrict measure would fail at the ballot box, but it ultimately passed, resulting in a major loss for the GOP. <br \/>\u201cIf the people framing this approach are confident about Virginia and they get \u200cbeat in Virginia, \u2060you have to question, are they overconfident about the whole package?\u201d one of the people familiar with the meeting told Reuters.<br \/>Republicans are reportedly now looking to emphasize local issues rather than prioritize loyalty to the president\u2014a break from the GOP\u2019s past campaign strategy.<br \/>\u201cThe politics have changed,\u201d one strategist told Reuters. \u201cIn January, nationalizing the race around him made some sense.\u201d<br \/>The strategist added, \u201cVoters don\u2019t feel the president is doing enough to make \u200btheir lives cheaper.
