It’s the first time since 2022 that the Giants have two top-10 picks and the second straight season they will pick twice in the first round.
But they don’t have one of their longest-tenured players in Lawrence. He demanded a trade on April 6 and didn’t attend their voluntary offseason workouts starting the next day.
Lawrence has been with the Giants since they drafted him 17th overall in 2019 and was a team captain since 2022. He made three Pro Bowls, two All-Pro second teams and has been among the NFL’s best at his position.
Lawrence had 30.5 sacks in seven seasons and commanded double teams due to his presence at 6-4, 340 pounds. It freed up teammates to have success and linebacker Brian Burns credited the attention on Lawrence for helping him get a career-high 16.5 sacks last season.
Yet things changed when Lawrence made his trade request with two years left on his contract. Giants coach John Harbaugh took the high road while touting Lawrence’s credentials on April 7.
“Speaking for the Giants, we want Dexter here,” Harbaugh said. “I believe Dexter wants to be here. That's a good formula. But there's business involved.”
General manager Joe Schoen added Tuesday that the team and Lawrence’s representation has good and productive talks. However, it was reported that night that talks reached an impasse and Lawrence’s future became murkier.
Lawrence signed a four-year, $90 million extension in 2023 that made him the third-highest paid defensive tackle based on average annual salary. He slipped to the 12th-highest paid as of this year and had no guaranteed money remaining on his deal.
His demand also came after a career-worst season where he had just a half-sack after a career-high nine sacks in 2024 before a season-ending elbow injury.
The Giants tried to sweeten Lawrence’s deal by adding up to $3 million in incentives last season. He received only $1 million of that due to his production.
Even with Lawrence, the Giants struggled to stop the run. They were last in opponent yards per carry last season and 31st in rushing defense. That was a regression from being 27th in rushing defense in 2024.
Harbaugh noted two weeks ago that everyone on the Giants is tradable. Now that message is clear with Lawrence heading to Cincinnati and the Giants in line to make two top-10 selections come Thursday.
Four years ago, when the Giants had two first-round picks, Schoen drafted Kayvon Thibodeaux and Evan Neal in his first draft as general manager. Last season, the Giants took Abdul Carter and Jaxson Dart in the first round.
“The more swings, the better chances of hitting,” Schoen said Tuesday. “It also allows you to build depth at different parts of the draft. You'd like for them all to become starters, but there are certain parts of the draft where you're looking for either special teams or depth pieces if somebody gets injured.”
But as the Giants prepare to pick fifth and 10th, they also have a major hole on defense after losing Lawrence. They also have a locker room that saw Saquon Barkley leave in free agency two years ago to the Eagles.
Lawrence, at least, won’t be in the same division. But the Giants have to replace one of their best players after holding firm to grant Lawrence his wish to play elsewhere.
Evan Barnes covers the Giants for Newsday.
