Sue Serino Invites Seniors to Learn Laughter’s Health Benefits – Dutchess County Government (.gov)

POUGHKEEPSIE, NY … Dutchess County Executive Sue Serino and the County’s Office for the Aging (OFA) invite older adults to enjoy an uplifting and engaging afternoon focused on the health benefits of humor at “Spring Into Happiness: Laughter Edition,” a free program on Wednesday, April 29 at 1 p.m. at the Franklin D. Roosevelt Presidential Library and Museum’s Henry A. Wallace Visitor and Educational Center, 4079 Route 9 in Hyde Park. Seating is limited and registration is required by calling the OFA at 845-486-2555 during regular business hours.
Dutchess County Executive Sue Serino said, “Our OFA’s ‘Spring Into Happiness’ event is a chance for older adults to come together and enjoy the benefits of laughter, reminding us how much joy comes from being together. People really enjoyed the chance to connect and learn at last year’s event and felt energized and refreshed. I hope to see many of our neighbors on April 29th so we can all share a good laugh!”
Open to Dutchess County residents age 60 and older, “Spring Into Happiness: Laughter Edition” will feature nationally recognized humorous motivational speaker Charles Marshall, whose interactive presentation blends humor and insight to promote emotional well-being and healthy aging. Light refreshments will be served.
Research has consistently shown laughter can play a meaningful role in overall health by reducing stress, relaxing muscles, lowering blood pressure and increasing oxygen flow throughout the body. Studies also suggest humor can support heart health, enhance learning and improve short-term memory. Even simple forms of humor, such as wordplay, for example, encourage the brain to think in new and flexible ways.
Last year’s “Spring Into Happiness” event drew hundreds of older adults, who enjoyed the entertainment and practical benefits. This year’s event is sponsored, in part, by Central Hudson Gas & Electric Corp.
The Dutchess County Office for the Aging provides services to help older adults and those needing long-term care live better, more independent lives.
