The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has yet to fully repair and replace damaged windows seven months after a man fired more than 180 shots at the organization’s Atlanta facility in August 2025. However, Dr. Jay Bhattacharya, the agency’s acting chief, acknowledged during a staff meeting in late March that the department has begun replacing the windows, many of which are papered over.
Media outlets report that CDC officials notified employees via email after the meeting that work has begun on the repairs. Officials say that each window must be custom-made, and installation is weather-dependent, slowing the process. More than 150 blast-resistant windows were damaged during the attack after a 30-year-old man fired around 180 rounds into the campus.
The gunman attacked the complex after he allegedly became fixated on the COVID-19 vaccine, believing it caused him to become depressed and suicidal. He was found dead at the scene after killing a police officer.
CDC officials say the attack damaged at least four buildings.
The Associated Press reports that following the incident, several “unionized CDC employees called for more heavily armed guards, [bullet-resistant] glass, a better alert system and more extensive evacuation planning for disabled employees and other vulnerable staff” at the complex.
