Stoppage-time stunner: Tampa Bay Rowdies substitute Evan Conway scored four and a half minutes into added time and the first-year woes continued for Sporting Club Jacksonville men’s soccer, denied 1-0 on April 4 at the University of North Florida’s Hodges Stadium.
Conway strikes: The Rowdies (4-0-0), on top of the USL Championship Eastern Conference, had commanded 70 percent of the possession with 16 shots before Conway’s game-winner. The breakthrough came 30 seconds from the end of the scheduled five minutes of stoppage time when Charlie Ostrem, on the field for only eight minutes, crossed from the left and Conway finished a close-range header.
Wait goes on: Sporting Jax (0-4-1) came closest in the 50th minute when Emil Jaaskelainen shot off the bar, but managed only one other shot on target.
Quick free kicks: Former Fletcher High School standout Brian Schaefer played all 90 minutes in central defense for the Rowdies. … Sporting Jax head coach Liam Fox switched to a five-man back line of Harvey Neville, Antonio Gomez, Ryan Edwards, Mohamed Traore and Tyshawn Rose in an attempt to shore up a defensive unit ranked at the bottom of the league. … Tampa Bay also struck the goal frame on shots by Sebastian Cruz and Marco Micaletto. … As in other games around the USL Championship, players continued the USL Players Association’s near-minute-long silent protest of the pace of progress in labor negotiations with the league.
Up next: The Sporting Jax men next travel to Detroit City FC for a 4 p.m. kickoff on Saturday, April 11.
