A surprise pivot could redefine Hungary’s foreign course, as opposition leader Peter Magyar frames next week’s vote as a choice about ties with Russia and Europe.
As reported by the Associated Press.
The leader of the Hungarian opposition party “Tisa,” Peter Magyar, stated that his future government would adhere to a pragmatic approach toward Russia.
In an exclusive interview with The Associated Press, he stressed that the decisive elections next week would become a referendum on whether Hungary will continue its path toward eastern autocracies or reclaim its place among Europe’s democratic societies.
Magyar himself, a former ally of Orbán, is regarded as one of the most serious threats to the prime minister’s government since he came to power in 2010.
“Pragmatism means that we do not interfere in the internal affairs of the Russian Federation, and they do not interfere in ours. We are two sovereign countries and we respect each other, but we do not necessarily have to like each other”

Magyar sharply criticizes Hungary’s rapprochement with Moscow and reports of possible interference by Russia’s security services in elections to benefit Orbán. He notes that his future government will adhere to a pragmatic course toward Russia and ensure the rational use of the EU’s energy resources.
According to the opposition leader, such an approach means rational management of EU resources and reducing dependence on a single energy supply line, while supporting internal stability and appropriate European integration.
Such a stance could influence Hungary’s future political course and its role in European energy policy, as the country chooses a path toward a more balanced engagement with the EU and its neighbors.
