NEWPORT NEWS, Va. — The University of Lynchburg softball team split their two contests on the road against the Christopher Newport Captains on Saturday, April 4, afternoon, winning 17-10 and falling 10-8.

Game One: Lynchburg 17, Christopher Newport 10
Alex Love led the Hornets with a 5-for-6 performance, scoring three times and driving in two runs. Sarah Watts went 4-for-4 with two walks, four RBI, and a home run. Alyssa Talayumptewa added two hits and two RBI, while Helen Maddux drove in two runs. Zoë Elliott finished 3-for-4 with three runs scored and an RBI, and Layla Lietzan scored twice with a hit and a walk.
The Hornets opened the scoring immediately in the first inning, as Watts launched a two-run home run to give Lynchburg a 2-0 advantage. Christopher Newport responded with a run in the bottom half, but Lynchburg quickly regained control in the second.
A four-run second inning extended the lead, highlighted by an RBI single from Alex Love, a bases-loaded walk from Georgia Thompson, and a two-run double from Talayumptewa. Christopher Newport answered with four runs of its own in the bottom half, trimming the lead to 6-5.
Lynchburg broke the game open in the third inning, scoring five runs. The inning featured aggressive baserunning, including a steal of home, along with RBI walks from Watts and Thompson and run-producing plays from Maddux and Talayumptewa to push the lead to 11-5.
Christopher Newport chipped away with single runs in the third and fourth innings, but Lynchburg maintained control. The Hornets added two more runs in the fifth, capitalizing on an error and an RBI groundout to extend the lead to 13-7.
After the Captains scored twice in the fifth to make it a four-run game, Lynchburg responded again. Love delivered an RBI double in the sixth, and the Hornets put the game out of reach in the seventh with three more runs, highlighted by RBI singles from Elliott and Watts and another RBI from Thompson.
Christopher Newport added a final run in the seventh, but Lynchburg secured the 17-10 victory.
Kate Charlton earned the win, tossing a complete game and allowing 10 runs on 16 hits with four strikeouts.

Game Two: Lynchburg 8, Christopher Newport 10
In game two, Sarah Watts led the offense with a 4-for-4 performance, scoring three runs and driving in two while hitting two home runs. Bryanna Orange added two hits, including a three-run home run, and finished with three RBI. Georgia Thompson and Helen Maddux each recorded two hits, and Sydney Bryant drove in a run off the bench.
After two scoreless innings, Watts put Lynchburg on the board with a solo home run in the third to tie the game at 1-1. Christopher Newport responded with a sacrifice fly in the bottom half to regain the lead.
The Captains extended their advantage in the fourth inning with three runs, including a solo home run and RBI hits to make it 5-1. Watts answered again in the fifth with her second home run of the game to cut the deficit to 5-2.
Lynchburg chipped away in the sixth, as Bryant delivered an RBI single to bring the Hornets within two. However, Christopher Newport responded with three runs in the bottom half, highlighted by a two-run double, pushing the lead to 8-3.
The Hornets mounted a late rally in the seventh. A sacrifice fly from Talayumptewa and an RBI fielder’s choice from Elliott cut into the deficit before Orange tied the game with a three-run home run to center, evening the score at 8-8.
Christopher Newport answered in the bottom of the seventh with a two-run home run to secure the 10-8 win.
McKenzie Booth took the loss, allowing seven runs on 10 hits over five innings, while Chase Hartford allowed three runs in relief.
