The wait is over for Apple CarPlay users as ChatGPT has become the first major AI app to make its way to the platform. The popular AI chatbot can now be downloaded on CarPlay to allow users to interact with the AI chatbot directly from the vehicle’s dashboard using hands-free commands.
The news of the ChatGPT app coming to CarPlay comes shortly after Apple released the iOS 26.4 update last week that opened the gates to third-party “voice-based conversational apps” after getting a special entitlement from Apple.
As per a MacRumors report, AI apps have to be limited to voice interactions on CarPlay and cannot show text or images in response to questions from users.
“Voice-based conversational apps must have a primary modality of voice upon launch; and after launch, appropriately respond to questions or requests and perform actions,” Apple says in its CarPlay developer guide.
The ChatGPT CarPlay version works similarly to the voice mode on the ChatGPT app on your phone, where users can simply talk to the AI and get verbal responses from it. As per a 9to5Mac report, the app also comes with an “End” button in the upper-left corner and a mute/unmute button in the upper-right corner.
Users also have the option to see the history of their prior interactions with ChatGPT.
Other than those two buttons, the only interaction method available is via voice. You can also view a list of your prior interactions for voice conversations.
While the new ChatGPT app allows users to ask questions and receive answers without using their hands, the app currently does not have the ability to control any internal vehicle or iPhone functions.
Moreover, there is no dedicated wake word, meaning users will need to manually tap the ChatGPT icon on their CarPlay display to initiate a conversation.
Update your iPhone to iOS 26.4 to enable support for third-party voice-based conversational apps.
Download or update the latest version of the ChatGPT app from the App Store.
Connect your iPhone to a CarPlay-enabled vehicle.
Tap on the ChatGPT icon on the CarPlay display to open the app and initiate a conversation.
While ChatGPT has arrived on CarPlay, there is no confirmation on when or if the popular chatbot will be coming to Android Auto. However, Google does provide access to Gemini in Android Auto, which can be used to ask for navigation, summarise messages, and even have hands-free conversations.
