Japan is undefeated in three meetings with Scotland to date and will be counting on keeping that record intact this Saturday as the two World Cup 2026 participants face off under friendly conditions on Saturday. Japan hasn’t even conceded so much as one goal in its three previous meetings with the Scots, the most recent of which came all the way back in October 2009. Both teams will travel to North America this summer in somewhat commanding positions based on their World Cup qualifying campaigns, though now is when the work begins in building some key confidence ahead of the biggest sporting event of the year.

Scotland was heading for a spot in the UEFA qualifying playoffs prior to leapfrogging Denmark in their final matchup of the group stage.
All the Danes needed was a draw from their trip to Hampden Park, but Scotland proved its mettle in a 4-2 home win that meant Steve Clarke’s side advanced direct to the tournament finals instead:
That performance served as an indicator of the calm under pressure Scotland has developed in recent years, not to mention the success the team has seen from its new, attacking blueprint.
Scott McTominay has been central to those plans even more so since marking a fresh start at Napoli in 2024, one of four Serie A-based midfielders now starring in Scotland’s midfield.
One name Celtic left-back Kieran Tierney will be well-acquainted with is club team-mate Daizen Maeda, who scored 33 goals in all competitions as the Hoops completed a domestic double last term.
Japan captain and Liverpool midfielder Wataru Endo is sidelined due to injury, while Monaco winger Takumi Minamino remains out and is at risk of missing the World Cup following a serious knee injury in December.
Scotland, meanwhile, have left the likes of Aaron Hickey, Lawrence Shankland, Ben Gannon-Doak and Ryan Porteous out as a new-look squad starts to take shape under Clarke.
The Scotland vs Japan game will take place on Saturday, Mar. 28, 2026 at 12:50 p.m. ET. Tune in and catch some scintillating soccer action.
