Portales, NM – On the outskirts of Portales, near the hospital, a former ethanol plant caught fire on Wednesday afternoon.
The former Abengoa ethanol plant fire was largely under control by 6 pm and State Police Hazmat teams were called to the scene later that evening due to the large quantities of highly flammable, alcohol-based hand sanitizer in the facility.
According to Portales City Manager Scott Mitten, two firefighters suffering from heat exhaustion were taken to Roosevelt General Hospital during the process of putting out the fire. There were no other reported injuries.
Officials say the fire began just after 3pm, appearing to have started outside building in a storage area before spreading inside. Fire departments from Portales, Dora, Elida, Clovis, Arch, and Floyd all responded to the emergency.
State Fire Marshal investigators are now looking into the initial cause of the fire.
