Petrobras has announced a new hydrocarbon discovery in Brazil’s prolific pre-salt region, following the drilling of an exploratory well in the Campos Basin, one of the country’s most mature offshore producing areas.
The discovery was made in the 1-BRSA-1404DC-RJS well, located in the SC-AP4 sector of the C-M-477 block, approximately 201 kilometers off the coast of Rio de Janeiro in water depths nearing 3,000 meters. According to the company, hydrocarbon presence was confirmed through electrical logs, gas shows, and fluid sampling, indicating a potentially productive reservoir.
While Petrobras has not yet disclosed resource estimates, fluid samples have been sent for laboratory analysis to better determine reservoir quality and hydrocarbon characteristics. These results will guide the next phase of appraisal and potential development planning.
The find underscores Petrobras’ continued focus on replenishing reserves through exploration in high-potential frontier areas, particularly in the pre-salt layer, which has been the backbone of Brazil’s production growth over the past decade. The Campos Basin, though more mature than the neighboring Santos Basin, remains an important target for new discoveries as operators apply advanced seismic imaging and drilling technologies to unlock deeper plays.
Petrobras operates the C-M-477 block with a 70% stake, alongside partner BP, which holds the remaining 30%. The block was awarded under Brazil’s 16th ANP licensing round and is governed by a concession regime.
The discovery comes as Petrobras continues to balance upstream investment with energy transition goals, maintaining oil and gas development to meet domestic demand while gradually expanding into lower-carbon energy segments.
This latest find adds to a growing list of recent exploration successes offshore Brazil, reinforcing the country’s position as one of the most attractive deepwater oil provinces globally.
