DODOMA: TANZANIAN Members of Parliament representing the country in the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) have been urged to ensure their participation aligns with the principles of the 2001 Foreign Policy, 2024 Edition, to safeguard and advance the country’s broader national interests on the global stage.
The call was made on April 2, 2026, at the Parliament Offices in Dodoma during a joint session between the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and East African Cooperation and the legislators. The meeting was chaired by the Deputy Speaker of Parliament, Daniel Sillo.
Presenting on behalf of the Ministry, the Director of Strategy and Global Affairs, Thobias Makoba, emphasized the need for MPs to align Tanzania’s priorities with the theme of the 152nd IPU Assembly: “Harnessing Hope, Advancing Peace, and Securing Justice for Future Generations.”
He noted that during the upcoming assembly to be held in Istanbul from April 15 to 18, 2026, delegates should prioritize economic diplomacy while upholding Tanzania’s non-aligned stance in international affairs. They were also encouraged to integrate the National Development Vision 2050 into their deliberations and decision-making processes.

Furthermore, he underscored the importance of using the global platform to promote Tanzania as a country grounded in the principles of justice and security—key factors in attracting investment. Delegates were also urged to leverage the opportunity to promote the country ahead of the 153rd IPU Assembly scheduled to take place in Arusha in October 2026, as part of preparations to demonstrate Tanzania’s readiness to host major diplomatic events.
In response, the MPs expressed appreciation to the Ministry for the guidance and pledged to represent the country effectively, uphold its dignity, and strengthen Tanzania’s position as a leader in parliamentary diplomacy both in Africa and globally.
