Student agencies are now student organizations after legislation passes in senate – The Sunflower

Wichita State’s Student Senate passed legislation Wednesday evening that changes student agencies to student organizations. The change was made to comply with state regulations that limit diversity, equity and inclusion language and initiatives.
The bill — first introduced at the March 11 Student Senate meeting — means that agencies no longer have direct staff support from the Office of Student Engagement and Belonging and will no longer receive funding from the student body president’s budget.
The agencies will now have to apply for funding through the appropriations process, like other student organizations on campus. The student body president decides how much of their budget goes to both agencies and the appropriations pool.
Student Body President Jia Wen Wang said that if she was the next president making their budget, she would simply reallocate the agencies’ funding into the appropriations budget, so that the agencies can still receive normal funding amounts without reducing the amount available for other student organizations.
Wang is not running for reelection and provided this as advice for the next president.
Student Senate meetings happen every week Wednesday during the fall and spring semesters, at 7:30 p.m. in the Rhatigan Student Center, room 233. The meetings are also live streamed to SGA’s YouTube.
