ZIPAIR has chosen Axinom Stream to power its new onboard streaming platform, marking another step in its digital-first approach to in-flight entertainment (IFE). The system delivers secure, high-quality content directly to passengers’ personal electronic devices (PEDs), supporting ZIPAIR’s goal of creating a flexible, software-driven passenger experience across its long-haul network.
At the core of the initiative is ZIPAIR’s commitment to a personal device-based in-flight entertainment model. As a subsidiary of Japan Airlines, the airline has positioned itself as a digital-first carrier, removing traditional seatback screens in favor of a fully connected, PED-driven experience.
“Axinom’s flexible, API-driven platform allows us to integrate seamlessly with our passenger experience portal while ensuring full compliance with Hollywood studio requirements.”

Axinom Stream enables the delivery of DRM-protected Hollywood content directly to passengers’ devices, meeting studio requirements while maintaining high-quality playback. This is particularly important for wireless IFE, where content security and reliability must match traditional embedded systems.
The platform uses an API-driven architecture, allowing ZIPAIR’s in-house digital team to integrate the streaming solution into its passenger experience portal. This approach gives the airline control over the user experience, while Axinom supports content delivery and management in the background. By integrating Axinom’s Player SDK and APIs, ZIPAIR can deliver a customized experience aligned with its brand and operational model.
“Our in-house digital team moves fast and thinks beyond traditional IFE,” said ZIPAIR CMO and Executive Officer Takuya Matsuo. “Axinom’s flexible, API-driven platform allows us to integrate seamlessly with our passenger experience portal while ensuring full compliance with Hollywood studio requirements. The collaboration is efficient, hands-on, and highly aligned with our vision.”
Updates can be sent over the air across the fleet, and ground-based teams can assign content to specific aircraft, tailoring selections by route to ensure relevance for each flight.
Beyond streaming, the platform provides a foundation for broader digital services onboard. By leveraging Axinom On-Board Cloud and Axinom Mosaic, ZIPAIR gains a flexible environment that can support additional features over time.
This software-centric approach reflects a shift in how airlines are designing inflight systems. Instead of relying on fixed hardware, they are moving to more flexible, cloud-based platforms that can be updated over time. For ZIPAIR, this means the airline can keep improving the passenger experience without needing major system changes.
“ZIPAIR represents a new generation of airlines, digital-first, agile, and unafraid to rethink established concepts,” said Axinom CEO Ralph Wagner. “We are proud to support their team with a platform that not only enables high-quality streaming today but also provides the foundation for future digital services. Our architecture ensures flexibility far beyond entertainment.”
Scalability remains a key advantage as ZIPAIR continues to expand its network. With a growing fleet and passenger base, the airline requires a platform that can maintain performance while supporting increased demand.
