A local music education program will celebrate one of its success stories Saturday. A graduate will take the stage at the historic Calumet Theatre.
The Dan Schmitt Gift of Music has sponsored the Go Rounds’ show. The concert marks a milestone as the organization’s first fundraiser of this type. The board of directors has helped students in the Copper Country discover musical passions since 2012. Hundreds of students have participated in the program for free music lessons.
“Last year we had 38. It varies from year to year depending on how much money we raise and then depending on our instructors as well and what they can fit in their schedule,” said Charmaine Parsons, treasurer of the Dan Schmitt Gift of Music.
The program extends beyond music instruction. Parsons and fellow board member John Parsons are both retired teachers from Calumet. They bring students to their farm to learn about gardening, sustainable practices, apple cider making and maple syrup production.
Saturday’s concert represents new territory for the organization. The group typically raises funds through the annual Farm Block Festival in Allouez.
“This opportunity came up and I think it’s just a really good way to get out our word more in the Copper Country to also mention the Farm Block Fest, which will be another fundraiser for the gift of music,” Parsons said. “And then also to honor the Go Rounds and Graham being born and raised in Calumet.”
The band and Calumet Theatre will receive payment first. Proceeds from the concert will then support free music lessons in the area.
The Go Rounds concert at the Calumet Theatre will begin at 7 p.m. Doors open at 6 p.m. General admission tickets cost $20. Children under 13 can attend for $10. Find concert details here.
