BERGEN COUNTY — There will be a handful of local contested primary races on June 2.
The June primary is the first step for candidates to be featured on the November general election ballot. All voters have to declare a party affiliation to participate.
Unaffiliated voters can still vote in the primary but must declare a party affiliation, Democrat or Republican, at the polls. After a voter casts an in-person vote in the Democratic or Republican Party primary election, the voter will be affiliated with that political party going forward. Party affiliations can be changed by completing, signing and returning a change of party affiliation form to the municipal clerk or county commissioner of registration.
On the county level, two Republicans are competing for a chance to become the next Bergen County Surrogate. In November, it will be the first time in 28 years the county elects a new surrogate. Last year, long-time Bergen County Surrogate Judge Michael R. Dressler died. The governor still has not named an interim replacement. The surrogate’s office administers adoptions, probates wills and supervises the appointment of estate administrators and guardians.
Contested local races include Bergenfield, Edgewater, Englewood, Palisades Park, Ridgefield, Rutherford, Tenafly, Franklin Lakes, Rockleigh and Wallington.
Since 2024, voting is held without the county line ballot design.
The block ballot design, which is used in all 49 other states, replaced the county line which traditionally gave candidates endorsed by the county party preferred ballot placement, and an edge in their efforts.
