NASA’s Artemis II mission is nearing liftoff, marking the first crewed lunar flight in over 50 years. The four‑astronaut crew — including Reid Wiseman, Victor Glover, Christina Koch, and Jeremy Hansen — are in final preparations at Kennedy Space Center, with a potential launch window in early April 2026. This ten‑day mission will fly around the Moon and back, testing life‑support systems and deep‑space navigation. Glover will become the first Black astronaut to approach the Moon, Koch the first woman, and Hansen the first non‑American beyond low Earth orbit.
NASA recently unveiled an ambitious roadmap under its renewed national space policy, emphasizing long‑term exploration goals including lunar infrastructure and nuclear‑powered interplanetary missions. This vision includes plans for building a Moon base and a spacecraft designed to explore Mars and beyond by the end of the decade. While NASA has pivoted away from the previously planned Lunar Gateway space station, resources and technology are being refocused on sustainable lunar exploration and deeper missions.
The European Space Agency has outlined a mission‑dense 2026, with key activities including:
Beyond human spaceflight, major uncrewed missions are shaping our understanding of the solar system:
2026 stands out as a pivotal year for global space exploration:
✔ Crewed lunar return: Artemis II will break decades‑long barriers in human spaceflight.
✔ Agency shifts: NASA reallocates resources toward strategic lunar and Mars ambitions, including nuclear propulsion concepts.
✔ International collaboration: ESA and partners pursue asteroid rendezvous, deep‑space science, and expanded satellite deployments.
✔ Science breakthroughs: Ongoing missions offer new insights into planetary systems, solar phenomena, and the evolution of the cosmos.
