Nathan Davis Jr. may be a singer and actor, but he hasn’t had it easy.
In the span of three years, he lost 14 family members, including his little brother to suicide. He endured that very dark time but continued on with courage and strength from God.
“I went into a deep depression. I always [thought that if I became successful — if I made enough money — my family would be safe. I thought success would somehow protect them],” he said, per the “Jesus Calling” podcast.
“[But when everything happened, I found myself asking], What’s the point of working? What’s the point of any of this? The people I wanted to share this with [were] all leaving,” he continued.
He felt purposeless and gave up.
“I stopped posting on social media,” he explained. “I [wasn’t auditioning anymore]. I was stress eating, gaining weight [and feeling overwhelmed].”
“I didn’t care about anything. I was out at clubs, [just living recklessly]. I [had the mindset of], Whatever happens to me, happens,” he said.

Then one day, he heard God speak after he called out to him, in a place of deep pain.
“And for the first time, I [had] a spiritual encounter with God. He came into my room, hugged me and [told me] He loved me,” he said. “I had never heard God’s voice before, and when [it happened], I [knew] this was different.”
Davis felt reassured that God was with him. He got better and started working again. Then one day, he heard his voice again.
“God [said], ‘I want you to make music for Me.’ And I [said], ‘[But I just finished an] amazing R&B album. Are You sure You want me to let this go? This is great music.’ But He [told me], ‘I’m going to take you further than you’ve ever been before.’”
“I started [making] Christian remixes, and they instantly [went] viral. [Usually] when you switch up your style on social media, it takes [time] for people to [adjust],” he said. “I went from doing comedy and [entertainment] to [making] serious, inspirational [music], [and it immediately connected],” he recalled.
He knows that his music is changing people’s lives — they tell him, and he can see it. He knows he’s following God’s call.
“God has been carrying me the whole time,” he said. “It’s all Him.”

Some of the testimony-filled lyrics from his song, “Woke Up This Morning,” are:
Walkin’ with Him, ain’t no second guessin’
Some call it luck, but I call it a blessing
He give me peace, ain’t no need to be stressin’
He never gave up on me
His promises He’ll always keep
Davis told Relevant that now, he doesn’t step into the studio unless he’s talked to God first.
He said, “I want to make music that shows God’s love, that reminds you you’re not perfect, but through God’s eyes, you’re always perfect. He loves you no matter what.”
After such unimaginable loss, Davis found incredible peace and purpose through God.
