This story is developing and will be updated with more information.
A storied high school football program has hired a new coach just ahead of spring training.
Douglas Byrd has hired Joe Salas as its new varsity coach after the departure of alumnus Dontre Brown, who served one season as the head coach, going winless in the span.
Salas served as Westover’s defensive coordinator last season, helping the Wolverines reach the NCHSAA 6A East playoffs and record two defensive shutouts.
“He (Salas) is a veteran coach with a wealth of head coaching experience in North Carolina. He has a reputation as an expert in the Air-raid philosophy of offensive football and a history of building exciting, successful football programs. We are extremely excited for Coach Salas to be a part of Douglas Byrd High School,” Byrd’s interim AD Troy Lindsey said in a statement.
Salas’s head coaching history consists of Lumberton, West Bladen, and Hobbton.
