FORT WHITE, Fla. (WCJB) – Fort White’s mayor is expressing support for the recall election to remove a fellow town council member.
The recall election for Lonnie Wayne Harrell is set for April 14.
Fort White Mayor George Thomas believes voters are unhappy with Harris, who is now getting legal support from the town government to fight the recall.
“He wasn’t even elected in the first place. He was appointed. So the first time the residents of his district are gonna get to vote for him, he wants to shut it down,” Thomas said.
Harrell proposed the town pay his legal expenses Monday night, and his motion was approved 3-2.
Thomas was against it, saying it amounted to using taxpayer money to reverse the will of voters.
The two have had tense relations recently, with the mayor walking out of one meeting in December.
