UPSTATE, S.C. (WACH) — The South Carolina Department of Public Health reported no new measles cases since Tuesday, keeping the total tied to an Upstate outbreak at 997.
Health officials say two people remain in quarantine, with no one currently in isolation. The latest quarantine period is expected to end on March 28.
A measles outbreak can be declared over after 42 consecutive days with no new cases, which is twice the virus’s 21-day incubation period and signals that transmission has stopped, according to health officials.
DPH continues to emphasize vaccination as the most effective way to prevent measles and limit the spread of the disease.
Vaccines are available through primary care providers, pharmacies, and local health departments.
Data from the outbreak shows most cases have been among school-aged children. Out of the 997 total cases, 639 were ages 5 to 17, 264 cases were in children under 5, 87 cases were in adults, and eight cases were of unknown age.
Health officials say they will continue to monitor the situation and provide updates.
