Preliminary figures from Statistics Sweden show state appropriations for research and development for the current year amount to 49.3 billion kronor. This represents a nominal increase of 1.1 percent compared to the 2025 budget. However, the share of the total state budget allocated to research and development has decreased to 3.2 percent, which is reported to be the lowest level since 2008.
The area of education and university research is the expenditure domain receiving the highest research funding, allocated 32.6 billion kronor. This is followed by the business sector and defense and societal crisis preparedness. The defense and societal crisis preparedness area saw the largest increase in funding, rising by 566 million kronor, a relative increase of 25 percent. The business sector area includes the state funding agency VINNOVA.
The most significant decrease in research appropriations is within the climate, environment, and nature domain, where funding is 672 million kronor lower than in the previous year’s budget. This decline is largely attributed to reduced framework funding for a specific industrial transition initiative, partly due to altered rules for project funding. The energy domain also saw a decrease of 100 million kronor.
When categorized by socioeconomic purpose, general knowledge development constitutes the largest share of the research budget, representing over 67 percent of total funds. This includes framework funding for universities and colleges as well as other grants. Within this category, natural sciences account for the largest portion, followed by medicine and health sciences. The defense purpose saw the largest relative increase compared to the 2025 budget, rising by nearly 20 percent.
The statistics are preliminary and based on the decided state budget. A final version, which will include amended budgets, is scheduled for publication at the end of the following year.
