Poland’s conservative opposition moved Saturday to oust Prime Minister Donald Tusk’s government through a parliamentary no-confidence motion, proposing a temporary administration as the country’s constitutional crisis deepened.
Former Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki said a motion of no confidence would be submitted against Tusk’s government and proposed replacing it with a temporary administration led by former Parliament Speaker Marek Jurek.
“We are submitting a motion of no confidence in Donald Tusk’s government,” Morawiecki wrote on US social media platform X.
“Our proposal: a technical government led by Marek Jurek, to remain in place until elections that will determine a new parliamentary majority,” he added.
The move marks a political escalation following a confrontation over Poland’s Constitutional Tribunal described by President Karol Nawrocki as a “violation of the constitutional order” and a “forcible takeover of a constitutional state body.”
Nawrocki cut short a trip to Senegal, returned to Warsaw overnight, and called urgent consultations with parliamentary parties on Saturday, citing what he called a threat to Poland’s internal security.
The crisis erupted after Judge Anna Korwin-Piotrowska suspended Tribunal head Bogdan Swieczkowski and assumed control of the institution, a move rejected by Swieczkowski and the Law and Justice (PiS) opposition as illegal.
Tusk’s government says it is acting to restore the rule of law after judicial changes introduced during eight years of PiS rule, which ended in 2023, while the opposition accuses it of attempting to seize control of independent state institutions.
