When we picture former tennis WAG Morgan Riddle, she’s sitting in a prominent sideline box watching her now-ex Taylor Fritz play and looking stylish in whatever preppy-chic outfit she’s pulled together for the match — Riddle knows that cameras will be focused on her, as will her hundreds of thousands of social media followers, so she prepares for the attention. Still, there’s one element to Riddle’s look that you can’t see, and it’s an important one: her sunscreen.
The influencer and marketing pro has said that sunscreen is a daily essential that she applies straight out of bed before her morning walk. She has revealed she applies it to her face and neck, extending that to her whole body if she’s spending the day outside. With all the myths surrounding sunscreen, we have to wonder, is that one application enough? Our expert, dermatologist Dr. Annette Czernik, tells Glam exclusively that Riddle’s onto a good thing, but with one caveat. “The best sunscreen routine depends on how much time you’re actually spending in the sun,” she says. “Applying sunscreen every morning is a great habit and is often enough if you’re spending most of the day indoors. However, if you’re outside for extended periods, sunscreen should generally be reapplied about every two hours.” For those unsure about it, here’s how often you should really be reapplying sunscreen.
Another one of Morgan Riddle’s rules for sunscreen is that it’s not just for the summertime. She applies it year-round. Riddle is a spokesperson for ISDN and wears the brand’s Fusion Water Magic with an SPF 40. For those interested in the truth about the difference in SPF numbers, is Riddle’s choice a good option? “SPF 40 is a solid choice for daily wear and provides strong protection against UV rays,” skin pro Dr. Annette Czernik tells us. “For most people spending limited time outdoors, it is more than adequate.” But if you’re outside for extended hours or “if you have a history of skin cancer,” like Riddle does in her family, you “may benefit from using a higher SPF,” says Dr. Czernik, adding that “consistent use and proper application are often more important than choosing the highest SPF available.”
Riddle is also steadfast about keeping sunscreen in her purse at all times, including when she travels. So what formula is right for you? Read these tips for ensuring you’re buying the right sunscreen for your skin type, then consider these recommendations from Dr. Czernik. Like Riddle, Czernik recommends ISDIN Fusion Water Magic “because it’s lightweight, absorbs quickly, and doesn’t leave a greasy feel.” She also likes “EltaMD UV Clear, especially for people with sensitive or acne-prone skin. […] La Roche-Posay Anthelios Melt-In Milk SPF 60 is another great option because it offers strong protection and comes in travel-friendly sizes.” Perfect for globe-trotting sports WAGs and the rest of us alike.
