As the Carney government continues to deepen diplomatic ties with Beijing, Chinese foreign interference in Canadian democracy has become so pervasive that a new report by the Montreal Institute for Global Security calls it “systemic.”
“We identified several recurring tactics as areas of foreign influence,” MIGS Global Affairs Director Marie Lamensch told reporters on Wednesday. “First, elite co-optation. The cultivation of political, economic and academic elites over time is something that is clearly seen in all G7 countries. These efforts often operate through access to prestige, ego, partnerships, business ties and long-term relationship building.”
