HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) – Celebrity chef Katie Chin is returning to Honolulu next month to perform a revamp of her heartfelt one-woman show “Holy Shiitake: A Wok Star is Born,” which blends food, family and finding your voice.
The show will run at the Manoa Valley Theatre on Wednesday, June 3, at 7:30 p.m.
Chin will also showcase her famous dumplings on Sunrise’s “What’s Cooking” segment on Sunday, May 31, at 8:45 a.m.
The Los Angeles-based author and cooking show veteran hosted the PBS series ‘Double Happiness’ with her mother Leeann Chin, who founded a successful Chinese restaurant empire in Minnesota in the 1980s that expanded in the Midwest.
Chin shares her journey as the daughter of a pioneering Chinese American restaurateur and says the show is a tribute to her mother and every immigrant mother. She brought her family’s immigrant story to Hawaii audiences last year with two sold-out shows.
The show shares her mother’s journey from Guangzhou, China, to Minnesota, and Chin’s relationship with her over the years, struggling to balance traditional Asian values with being an American-born Chinese girl in the not-so-diverse Midwest.
“I talk about being ashamed of being Chinese American in Minnesota back in the ’70s and ’80s. My mom would put barbecue char siu bao in my lunchbox and I was mortified and kids made fun of me and now I have 16 year old twins who are hapa and they are so proud to bring char siu bao to lunch and all their friends just wanna snag them,” Chin said.
Tickets are available at manoavalleytheatre.com or by calling the box office at 808-988-6131.
