As the mango season started, the prices for apples in India started dropping, as consumption decreased significantly, says Prashant Gidwani, founder of Indian fruit importer Fresh Fruit Alliances: “Apple prices have been at the lowest levels seen this season. One of the main reasons is the mango season, as Indian consumers naturally shift towards mangoes during this period. The extreme summer heat has also affected apple consumption. Since a large share of fruit in India is sold through traditional channels such as small fruit shops, street vendors, and carts, maintaining fruit quality and movement becomes difficult during high temperatures.”
Although there is domestic cultivation of apples, there’s demand for imported apples year-round, Gidwani explains. “Domestic apples currently account for around 35 to 40 per cent of the market, and are mainly consumed in North and Central India, where local fruit is more easily available. The remaining demand across the country is currently fulfilled by imported apples, which maintain a strong presence and demand in the Indian market year-round.”

According to Gidwani, two specific origins are seen much more in the market this year: “South African and Brazilian apples are arriving in much larger volumes compared to previous years, especially Royal Gala apples. The Middle East situation has had a major impact on the trade. Currency depreciation and higher logistics costs have increased the overall cost of imports. At the same time, import challenges in the Middle Eastern markets have resulted in more fruit being diverted to India, leading to higher volumes and additional pressure on the market.”
“Royal Gala and Red Delicious continue to be the most preferred apple varieties in the Indian market and remain the strongest sellers across all regions,” Gidwani continues. “At the same time, Flash Gala from South Africa is gaining good acceptance due to its attractive colour, crunch, and eating quality, with market demand improving steadily. We’re also seeing better demand for premium coloured Gala varieties, especially in organised retail and premium wholesale segments.”
“We expect apple demand to improve gradually in the coming weeks as the mango season starts slowing down. With the arrival of the monsoon, the temperatures are expected to come down as well. Meanwhile, local apple availability is expected to reduce further, which should help improve movement and demand for imported apples across the country. With an established distribution network across 500+ cities in India, we are geared up to support stronger market movement as overall apple consumption is expected to improve in the coming weeks,” Gidwani concludes.
