While it took two separate tenures with the Cleveland Cavaliers, LeBron James finally delivered on his promise as “The Kid from Akron” to bring a championship to the city of Cleveland in 2016. Outside of that lone championship, however, the Cavaliers’ trophy cabinet is relatively empty.
In 2026, the team finally returned to its first Eastern Conference Finals since 2018 after a seven-game series against the No. 1 seed Detroit Pistons. Outside of the James era, this became the team’s first Conference Finals appearance since 1992.
In franchise history, the Cavaliers have made the playoffs in just under 50% of their seasons. Despite eleven of the team’s playoff runs ending in the first round historically, the team is still on the chase for its second trophy.
Here is the latest playoff history for Cleveland as of May 2026.

The Cavaliers have won one championship, which came in 2016. Despite making four-straight NBA Finals from 2015 to 2018, Cleveland was only able to walk away with a singular Larry O’Brien trophy.
Outside of James’ tenure with the team, the Cavaliers have previously and are yet to return to the grand stage of the NBA Playoffs as of May 2026. Across their franchise history, Cleveland has won five of their eight Eastern Conference Finals appearances.

Cleveland’s last appearance in the NBA Finals came in 2018. That season, the Cavaliers were promptly swept in four games by the Warriors. From 2015 to 2018, Cleveland and Golden State met up in four straight NBA Finals; however, the Cavaliers were only victorious in one of those series.
The team’s 2018 win was the first championship trophy brought back to Cleveland in 52 years. James had promised to bring the city their first championship in a Sports Illustrated essay, according to the NBA.
“Our city hasn’t had that feeling in a long, long, long time,” James wrote. “My goal is still to win as many titles as possible, no question. But what’s most important for me is bringing one trophy back to Northeast Ohio.”

Since joining the NBA as an expansion team in 1970, the Cavaliers have made the playoffs in 26 of their 56 seasons as of May 2026. With over 260 playoff games played, the team is sixteenth all-time in playoff victories as of May 2026, according to StatMuse.
Cleveland’s lone championship came in 2016, when James and the Cavaliers stormed back from a 3-1 series deficit to overcome Golden State in one of the most iconic Game 7s in NBA Finals history. That victory ended the city of Cleveland’s championship drought, which had spanned 52 years across its MLB, NFL, and NBA teams.
Here is a look at Cleveland’s full playoff history since joining the NBA.
