Two online content creators were arrested from Dinhata in West Bengal’s Cooch Behar district for allegedly posting an offensive video targeting Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari, a senior police officer said on Thursday. The summit includes an extensive series of engagements between the two leaders. Further meetings, including tea and lunch discussions, are planned for Friday. Xi is also tentatively expected to visit the United States later this year — potentially his first trip to America since Trump returned to office in 2025.
Trump enters the Beijing talks under growing domestic pressure. Recent U.S. court decisions have limited his ability to impose tariffs unilaterally, weakening one of his key negotiating tools with China. At the same time, the economic impact of the Iran war has fuelled concerns about inflation and electoral backlash for Republicans.
Chinese President Xi, by contrast, faces fewer immediate political pressures despite slowing economic growth at home.
Taiwan is expected to emerge as one of the most sensitive flashpoints during the summit. China reiterated this week that it strongly opposes U.S. arms sales to Taiwan, including a proposed $14-billion package awaiting Trump’s approval. The United States does not formally recognise Taiwan diplomatically but is legally obligated to provide the island with defensive support. Beijing considers Taiwan part of its territory and has repeatedly warned Washington against deeper military ties with Taipei.
The conflict involving Iran is expected to loom large over discussions. Trump is widely expected to ask Xi to pressure Tehran into reaching an agreement with Washington to end the conflict. However, analysts remain sceptical that China will significantly alter its support for Iran. Beijing sees Tehran as an important strategic counterweight to U.S. influence in the Middle East.
The Iran conflict has also complicated Trump’s domestic political standing, contributing to inflation concerns and raising fears among Republicans ahead of the U.S. midterm elections.
Officials involved in planning the summit said the two sides are also expected to discuss mechanisms for AI dialogue and broader frameworks to support trade and investment cooperation. Technology remains one of the most contentious areas in U.S.-China relations, especially around advanced chips and AI infrastructure.
At the centre of the summit is a trade understanding reached last October, when Trump suspended triple-digit tariffs on Chinese goods and Beijing eased pressure on global rare earth exports. Both governments are now looking to stabilise that truce. Washington is expected to push China to buy more U.S. products — including Boeing aircraft, agricultural goods and energy supplies — in an effort to narrow America’s trade deficit with China. Beijing, meanwhile, wants the U.S. to relax export controls on advanced semiconductors and chipmaking equipment.
Joining Trump on the trip is a heavyweight business delegation that includes Elon Musk and Jensen Huang. Huang reportedly boarded Air Force One during a refuelling stop in Alaska after a personal request from Trump. Several executives travelling with the president are expected to push for improved market access and fewer restrictions for U.S. firms operating in China. Trump has repeatedly said he wants China to “open up” further to American business.
