Birmingham-Shuttlesworth International Airport is celebrating serving the Magic City for 95 years. The airport's birthday is technically May 31, but they'll be celebrating this milestone all month long.
May 31, 1931, marked the day Birmingham-Shuttlesworth opened for business. That day also welcomed American Airways to the community, helping Birmingham's airport business grow.
The airport had many memorable moments over the decades they've served Birmingham.
1986: The Birmingham City Council established the Birmingham Airport Authority (BAA) in 1986, bringing a new era of growth to our local transportation hub. It would be renamed as the Birmingham-Shuttlesworth International Airport to honor civil rights activist Reverend Fred Shuttlesworth in 2008.
Now, you can fly out of Birmingham nonstop to 22 airports and 19 cities. They served 3.3 million people in 2025.
