WASHINGTON — A group of military spouses lobbied members of Congress on Thursday to pass legislation helping them own small businesses.
They are pushing Congress to pass the Military Spouse Small Business Recognition Act. If passed, it would unlock opportunities for military spouses through the Small Business Administration, including federal contracting opportunities, mentorship programs and lower fees for SBA-guaranteed loans.
After months of 12 On Your Side reporting, DHA this week officially confirmed its intent to transition Eisenhower to an ambulatory care center.
“We have been advocating and trying to get this recognition and just be recognized in general, that not all military spouses today are seeking traditional employment. In fact, that option is oftentimes very difficult,” said Stephanie Brown, U.S. Military Spouse Chamber of Commerce CEO.
According to the U.S. Department of Labor, the military spouse unemployment rate is about 22 percent, more than four times the national average.
