As the season comes to an end, the UND Men’s Tennis team is keeping their rhythm and staying strong both on and off the court. Holding the second team standing in the Summit League as they head into their final regular season match up against Illinois State before the play-offs. As the season progresses, the team is focused on ending the season strong.
This final matchup of the regular season is make or break for the team, deciding their fate into the playoffs. The team started the season off on a strong foot, consecutively winning their first four matches, before hitting a mid-season dip, which they have proven to bounce back from. They have regained their momentum to end the season on a high note.
This season has been highlighted as a year of development. With a mix of veteran players and new faces om the team, building strong team relationships and connections has been key to helping them flourish.
“Being new to the team and colligate tennis this year I was a little nervous coming into it but the true aspect of being a team and the sense of community that we have has made it an easy transition,” said Fr. UND Men’s Tennis player, Justin Ilic.
One of the teams’ defining strengths that has been seen throughout this season has been their relentless competitiveness. Match after match players show their willingness to fight until the last point and give it their all. This determination and drive has helped the team stay resilient throughout the season and gives them hope for the playoffs.
“Seeing my teammates be so competitive and resilient no matter the odds, score or exhaustion has truly been inspiring to me and has pushed me to be a better player,” said Ilic.
Despite their strengths this season, the team has still faced challenges along the way. Inconsistency and lapses in focus have costed the team this season. Additionally, player injuries have negatively impacted the team this season, causing line-up changes and adjustment. Despite these challenges, the team has adapted and is ready to take on what the rest of the season has in store.
As the regular season wraps up, their hopes for a post season and a chance in the playoffs stay strong. Taking place on Apr. 25-25, in Tulsa, Oklahoma. Not having a National Championship under their belt, the team is hoping their drive, skill and teamwork will lead them to the championship and make history for UND.
Regardless of the outcome, this season has left a positive mark on the Men’s Tennis program here at UND. From early struggles to late-season comebacks, the team has shown development, resilience, and a strong competitive spirit.
