Rafael Ribas, a professor of economics, has extended his impact from Boise State to the global stage by serving as a reviewer for the 7th World Congress of Environmental and Resource Economists.
Co-organized by the Asian, European, African and Latin American Associations of Environmental and Resource Economics; the event brings together representation from around the world. The peer review process, often unseen, acts as a critical filter, ensuring that research entering the field meets a certain level of rigor, relevance and clarity.
For Ribas, the role is less about recognition and more about responsibility. “As academics, our job is not only to present and publish our own work, but also to help improve the work of others; thereby helping maintain high standards in our discipline,” he said.
That commitment drives his approach to service. In addition to reviewing for the World Congress, Ribas continues to contribute to other major academic forums, including upcoming work for the Annual Conference of the Association for Public Policy Analysis and Management.
“This type of service also helps me stay up to date with recent research in my field,” he added.
It’s a role that requires the expertise to balance encouragement with critique in a way that ultimately elevates the work. While the stage may be global, his goal remains consistent: advancing knowledge by holding it to a high standard.
