At least three people at BP Cherry Point Refinery in Blaine were injured the morning of Saturday, April 18 after an industrial accident, according to the company.
Witnesses at the refinery and in Birch Bay heard an explosion around 10:20 a.m. Employees at the refinery were evacuated.
In a statement, a BP spokesperson said the incident is contained and there’s no risk to nearby communities. All other staff were accounted for.
An earlier message from BP this morning reported four people were injured in the accident. By 4:30 p.m., BP revised the number of injured people to three.
Whatcom County Fire and EMS responded to the incident at 10:25 a.m. and transported the injured employees to a local hospital. In a statement, the organization said it was not involved in incident mitigation.
The company did not say what kind of accident happened at the refinery or what caused it.
