Suspended Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Police Department (EMPD) Deputy Chief Julius Mkhwanazi was arrested by the SAPS Madlanga Commission Task Team at his Gauteng home on Saturday morning.
The 50-year-old was arrested on charges of fraud, corrupting and defeating and/or obstructing the ends of justice.

National Police Spokesperson Brigadier Athlenda Mathe said in a media statement the task team is still searching for other suspects linked to the case.
“These arrests emanate from an ongoing investigation into corruption within the Ekurhuleni Metro Police Department (EMPD).
No further comment will be provided on the merits of the case at this stage,” she said.
All suspects are expected to appear before the Boksburg Magistrate’s Court on Monday April 20.
This week at the Madlanga Commission, Mkhwanazi was questioned about his mother’s death to establish if he tried to avoid an earlier appearance.

Mkhwanazi, who is under criminal investigation, was grilled about his absence after previously failing to appear, citing bereavement.
The Madlanga Commission is
the Commission of Inquiry into Criminality, Political Interference, and Corruption in the Criminal Justice System.
It is named after its chairperson, retired acting Deputy Chief Justice Mbuyiseli Madlanga.
The hearings began in September last year and is ongoing.
